Blank Pages

Excerpt from Not All Roads Lead Home by Jane Bullard

For a writer, the continuing blank page, as it just sits there, is quite imposing. So can be life’s blank pages.

I received a special invitation to a luncheon at the Vice-President’s mansion inside Washington, D.C. Guests stood in line with invitations in hand and then went briefly inside to shake Mrs. Barbara Bush’s hand. I was so moved to be there that I said to her, “This is my first time at the Vice President’s home,” to which she replied, with a relaxed smile, “Well, just look around all you like!” ….

When the New York position did not pan out, I relaxed. We probably would stay right where we were.

However, questions lingered for two years during which the future seemed like a huge blank page. I did not question Josh about his thoughts on what might come next. Offers came, but he had no interest in them. We were learning to trust God during periods of long, blank pages. For a writer, the continuing blank page, as it just sits there, is quite imposing. So can be life’s blank pages.

Yet, while I sensed that Josh was searching for what he wanted to do next, I always believed that it would work out. He remained steady and positive.

One of the first verses I had learned in our early years back together was, “Wait on the Lord.” I placed the blank page there, wanting to be ready and at peace.
